Summary

Protein Function

Arginase, belongs to the ureohydrolase family of enzymes, which catalyses the conversion of arginine to urea and ornithine, exists as two distinct isoforms (arginase I and arginase II). Arginase I is expressed almost exclusively in the liver where it serves as an essential enzyme of the urea cycle, while arginase II is expressed in the kidney and many other extrahepatic tissues. Arginase catalyzes the fifth and final step in the urea cycle, a series of biochemical reactions in mammals during which the body disposes of harmful ammonia. Specifically, arginase converts L-arginine into L-ornithine and urea. (From Wikipedia, PMID: 18488197)
